be selected/be picked for the World Championship in Budapest
Explanation:
What sport is this? However, this is what I'd normally use, this is the meaning of convocare here: a National team coach selecting athletes to form a national team.

agree  JohnMcDove: Yes, in my view, "to be called"... simply. One may "qualify", but the coach needs to call you.

I hope to qualify for the Olympics in Budapest

Explanation:
In EN I think countries are invited (sono convocati) but individual athletes qualify (qualificano).

-> Wrong year, wrong town, thanks. (FINA) World Championships. Here also, however, the idiom seems to be "qualify."

neutral  writeaway: I don't really see how you can stretch convocare to mean 'to qualify'.

-> Fair enough. I never thought qualify was a closely equivalent word but I felt constrained by the scenario of hoping to qualify. Will just await the voters' verdict here and wish the young man all the best.

neutral  mrrafe: It's swimming (To Claudia: that it's swimming, isn't meant to be a counterargument to anything; I was just answering your question as to what sport. Neutral as to the meaning of convocare.)

-> ok..so why neutral? "Selected" works perfectly for swimming too. https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/usa-synchro-annou...

agree  writeaway: yes, this works. nothing to do with qualifying -the verb is convocare/somewhere in all this the English does have to reflect the Italian...

-> yep (that should be the whole point, BTW). Several athletes may qualify, but only a few may then be selected. thanks
