If the text is about the uprisings in the Middle East and elsewhere that were organized on and driven by social media, then it's probably more correct to talk about online/Web channels or social media than Internet users, since it's the medium that was key to spreading the unrest, not the users.

So you could have something like "the prevalence of social media in the uprisings of the past century has played a major role in shaping regional politics".

But secolo scorso doesn't make much sense, since all that happened this century, and although the basic infrastructure of the Web was built in the 80s and 90s, it really exploded after 2000. I can't think of any Internet-fuelled unrest before then.

I'm not a fan of the FRA internaute or its ITA cousin either, let alone their English mutants. But beware ghits, the numbers are seldom reliable and not a good indication of frequency. Rather look for reliable references or actual instances of usage.

It gets 400,000 hits in English, and it's very common in French, where it gets a hundred times that number and often means "website visitors". But I wouldn't use it - it sounds translated, and we're all internauts now.

If a word seems unknown to the language until one looks it up, I think it needs further acceptance before one troubles the reader with it. I don't see that internettaro is any more recognized in IT than internaut in EN. The backformation also is troubling, as the word would more logically be internetnaut.
