projection plane Explanation: Also known as plane of projection. Wikipedia cryptically defines it as a type of view in which graphical projections from an object intersect. In other words, it's the plane on which the lines starting from a centre of projection end up after passing through each vertex that makes up that object. This means that any technical drawing is by definition a projection plane as it represents a 2D (planar) view of the object, and that's probably why it's called quadro in Italian. After all, quadro can also be used to indicate a technical drawing or exercise in Italian drawing classes. Wikipedia also mentions that a projection plane can be called a picture plane in perspective drawing but, even though this phrase sounds very similar to quadro, I'm not sure it can be applied to all kinds of axonometry. Here's a further clue: in Assonometria (IT): "il principio alla base dell'assonometria è la proiezione di un oggetto geometrico su un piano (piano di proiezione o quadro)". -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2015-03-28 13:03:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Sorry. I made a mistake and I feel I need to clarify. The plane of projection is actually in between the object we're trying to represent and the observer. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2015-03-28 13:29:11 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Oh, it's just I realised the centre of projection, from which the projector lines stem, is actually behind the observer and not behind the object. But you are right... that mistake does not affect the translation. |
