In bad shape, worse for the wear, scrambling
Explanation:
The expression usually refers to financial status, but here I think it refers to more than that, ie. the expertise and knowledge base of the company and its ability to act to satisfy the customers.
I think your idea of "in bad shape" works fine. Otherwise something like "scrambling", etc.

in a bad place

Explanation:
I was going to put "without two pennies to rub together" which I feel is close to the idea of the Italian expression but I'm unsure of how 'financial' the meaning is here.

As this saying is quite generic it could work whatever the particulars of the case may be.
