Italian term or phrase: designer autoprodotto
This concept comes up a few times in the article and I wondered what the correct translation is. It is written in relation to the SaloneSatellite part of the Salone del Mobile trade fair in Milan. I've found sellf-production designers but this usually comes up as the translation of Italian texts on the subject:

Se poi consideriamo che dall’altra parte delle transenne abbiamo visto una fiera interessante sotto il profilo delle idee, ma figlia di investimenti produttivi cauti, possiamo dire che almeno per i prodotti ottenuti da lastra non c’è alcuna differenza qualitativa tra la grande azienda e il giovane designer autoprodotto.

Tra i frequentatori di Euroluce c’è chi negli anni ha acquisito un’abitudine che definirei benefica: durante la caotica e per certi versi claustrofobica settimana del Salone del Mobile ci si prende un pomeriggio “d’aria fresca” varcando le transenne del padiglione 22-24, il così detto padiglione Satellite interamente dedicato a giovani designer, istituti universitari di progettazione e piccole autoproduzioni.

Going to go out on a limb here...

"non c’è alcuna differenza qualitativa tra la grande azienda e il giovane designer autoprodotto" = no qualitative difference between the product of a big company and the product self-produced by a young designer.

"piccole autoproduzioni" = small self-producers (as opposed to big companies)

Explanation:
It's exactly the same idea in English as in Italian - they've built their own careers, probably working independently or for small companies, rather than for big firms with a highly developed career structure.
