come potrebbe essere tradotto "sfugge alle nostre misure abituali"? Ecco il testo (si parla del Mar Mediterraneo)

questo mare è un personaggio complesso, ingombrante, fuori serie. Sfugge alle nostre misure abituali. Inutile volerne scrivere la semplice storia: “Ė nato il…”; inutile voler dire, a suo riguardo, le cose alla buona, come sono avvenute… Il Mediterraneo non è neppure un mare, è, come fu detto, un “complesso di mari”, e di mari ingombri di isole, tagliati da penisole, circondati da coste frastagliate. La sua vita è mescolata alla terra, la sua poesia è più che a metà rustica, i suoi marinai sono contadini.
