Οι οικογένειες αβγουλώνονται μεταξύ τους, ενώ η γηραιότερη πρέπει να πασαλείψει το νεαρότερο μέλος της οικογένειας για να 'χει όλο τον χρόνο καλοτυχία.

This refers to a Bulgarian Easter custom. I haven't consulted any Bulgarian sources on this, but in any case I'd like a Greek perspective on the verb αβγουλώνονται.

Στην Ελλάδα όμως:

1. όταν λέμε "αυγούλωμα" ή "αβγούλωμα", εννοούμε τη ρίζη ωμών αυγών στον άλλο.

2. το Πάσχα έχουμε το *τσούγκρισμα* των βαμμένων αυγών. Τσούγκρισμα αυγών=egg tapping, egg knocking.

Δεν γνωρίζω να υπάρχει κάποιο μέρος της Ελλάδας όπου το Πάσχα να πετάνε ωμά αυγά ο ένας στον άλλον. Πάντως, σε κάθε περίπτωση στα Ελληνικά, αυγούλωμα σημαίνει πετάω ωμά αυγά (που φαίνεται να ταιριάζει με την πρόταση που έδωσες) και δεν πρέπει να συγχέεται με το τσούγκρισμα.

Yes I've also heard stories or "legends" about champion eggs that beat everyone!, its s'th akin to conker fights in the U.K. You know the tactics, dipping them in vinegar and all that ;-))

Asker: Thanks. Egg cracking seems to be the most widely known custom. I asked a colleague who translates Bulgarian, and he said there have been cases of children who use wooden eggs so that they win!

Asker: What I'm really after here is the meaning of the Greek verb in itself (whether or not the writer is correct in his description of the Bulgarian custom).

-> I agree Dimitri that *τσούγκρισμα* is egg tapping/cracking but I can't help thinking here that the writer of the source text has used "αυγούλωμα" to mean the same thing. Secondly throwing food at Easter seems a mighty strange custom!?

Metodi Gerasimov: Ασφαλώς εμείς, οι Βούλγαροι δεν ρίχνουμε αυγά ο ένας στον άλλον, παρά μόνο να τα τσουγκρίζουμε. Τίποτα το πρωτοφανές για τα γεωγραφικά μέρη μας:) Άρα, το πρόβλημα δεν είναι με την απόδοαση της λέξης, αλλά με τον ίδιο τον όρο στο πρωτότυπο κείμενο.
