Strudel m. ‘Wasserwirbel, lebhaftes Treiben’, frühnhd. strudel (15. Jh.; vgl. den Ortsnamen Strodelbach, 1394), Rückbildung aus strudeln Vb. ‘trichterförmig wirbeln, wallen, brodeln, sprudeln’ (15. Jh.), mundartlich auch strodeln, das sich mit Ablaut und iterativem l-Suffix zu ahd. stredan ‘geräuschvoll brennen, zischen’ (9. Jh.) stellt. Vergleichbar (obwohl lautlich nicht befriedigend) sind griech. rhóthos (ῥόθος) ‘das Rauschen der Wogen, der Ruder’, übertragen ‘Geräusch’, akorn. stret ‘Flüssigkeit’, mkorn. streyth ‘Fluß’, mir. srithit ‘Strahl von Milch oder Blut’, so daß von ie. *sredh-, *stret- ‘strudeln, wallen, brausen, rauschen’, einer Erweiterung der unter ↗Strom (s. d.) angeführten Wurzel ie. *ser(ə)- ‘strömen, sich rasch und heftig bewegen’, ausgegangen werden kann (mit t-Einschub im Germ. zwischen s und r). Südd.-öst. Strudel ‘Mehlspeise mit eingerolltem Obst oder Fleisch’ (17. Jh.), nach dem spiraligen Muster der aus der Teigrolle geschnittenen Stücke
