Abrufzentrale

English translation: video server

German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Telecom(munications) / ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) technology
German term or phrase: Abrufzentrale
From the same text as my previous question.
Das System nach Fig. XX weist eine ATM-Vermittlungsstelle, eine Vorfeld-Zentrale, mehrere Teilnehmereinrichtungen, zwei ABRUFZENTRALEN, ein Breitband-Fernmeldenetz und zwei optische Breitband-Netzabschlusseinheiten auf.

Eine der ABRUFZENTRALEN ist ueber eine Anschlussleitung an einer der ATM-Anschlussschaltungen an die ATM-Vermittlungsstelle angeschlossen.

I'm guessing "call center/hub", "retrieval center/hub", but as I said in my previous question I don't know anything about asynchronous transfer mode technology. And as with the term of my previous question, googling the term just gives machine translations.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

English translation:video server
Explanation:
Literally means "request handling center," so some kind of server, as also indicated in Figure 1 (40). Compare with Figure 14.2:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb962019.aspx

In this context, it should be the video server.

The main components of a video on demand service are shown in figure: The video server to store and provide access to programmes, the data delivery network to interconnect the subscriber and the user-end set-top box to interface home TV equipment with the VoD services.

A video server is provided with buffer manager which balances the loads on the various "movie storage" elements of a video server by preferentially buffering streams on highly loaded storage elements.

Glad this helped. I forgot to add that Figure 1, (40) refers to the fig. in the patent you are looking at: http://www.google.com/patents/EP0701384B1?cl=de

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, Herbal. I think that this is it. Video on demand (vod) is used as an example in this text, and even appears in parentheses after the term much further on. I think that I'll use the more general term "server".

Asker: PS: Thanks for thevery helpful website!
