Freigabe des Sicherheitsbereichs

English translation: enable (equipment in) the safety zone

German term or phrase: Freigabe des Sicherheitsbereichs
"Bei der Freigabe des Sicherheitsbereiches ist darauf zu achten, dass sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt keine Person mehr im Gefahrenbereich der Maschine befindet!"

From an operating manual for an industrial machine from an Austrian manufacturer. I cannot find a word for 'Freigabe' in English that I'm satisfied with (release, approve, authorise and so on). The sense I'm getting is 'confirm' or 'making sure the safety area is clear'.

Thanks in advance.

English translation:enable (equipment in) the safety zone
Explanation:
I always use “enable” in this context. Generally, however, we say that the equipment in the zone is enabled, not the zone itself.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions for this (although the many answers added to my confusion to some extent!). I did end up sending a query to the agency to give to the client on this and, much to my surprise, they got back to me. Although they did not offer an explanation themselves, they said my suggestion "eine in diesem Bereich befindliche Maschine in Betrieb nehmen" was the correct one. So, I have gone with 'enabling equipment/machinery'. Thank you, Darin.

When granting safety area clearance

Explanation:
This involves confirming, authenticating, or verifying that the safety area is indeed clear. I like the word grant here, as in "the FBI agent was granted security clearance."

agree  Birgit Gläser: I think this should work even in terms of machinery... clearance just means to be allowed to go into an area... be it in a lab, an airport or other places

Permission to enter the safety area

Explanation:
Freigabe = clearance = permission. We are looking at restricted areas, entering requires clearance (of an individual person) or permission (in general). In this case, the latter applies.

Opening up (reopening) the Safety Zone.

Explanation:
(Very frequently encountered in translation of process engineering materials.)
While a hazardous operation is performed, part of the surrounding area will be blocked off to non-participants. This may be called the "Safety Zone". Subsequently, it is opened to (some or all) non-participants.

--------------------------------------------------

The reason why no one ought to be in the hazard zone when the Safety Zone is opened is that there is a risk that a person in the hazard zone will interact with someone in the Safety Zone, and, in so interacting, the person in the hazard zone may be injured by some hazard existing in the hazard zone.

check that the safety zone is clear of people

Explanation:
When you start up the machine, make sure/check that the safety zone is clear of people

Based on knowledgeable input, I would probably revise a follows:

"Make sure that the hazard zone is free of people before giving the all clear."

-> Haha, you’re right. Who knew that German could be so confusing?;)

neutral  Björn Vrooman: Found the doc and no, no one is allowed back in. If someone enters the zone after they resume normal operations, the alarm goes off (eg, see p. 25). Similar to a lockout: https://www.dir.ca.gov/dosh/etools/08-003/P08-00301B.pdf // Re-establish might work.
