"Ein bewährtes Vorgehen, um bei komplexen Aufgabenstellungen in der Raumplanung, im Städtebau und in der Architektur zu guten Lösungen zu gelangen, ist die Durchführung von ***Varianzverfahren*** unter mehreren Planungsteams. Das Ziel jedes Varianzverfahrens ist, die «beste und zweckmässigste Lösung» zu finden. Dies bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass es einen Gewinner geben muss. Wettbewerbe können zwischen offenen (Anzahl der Teilnehmer unbestimmt) und eingeladenen Wettbewerben (Anzahl der Teilnehmer bestimmt) unterschieden werden. Eingeladene Wettbewerbe werden auch als Studienauftrag bezeichnet. Im Unterschied zu den offenen Wett bewerben werden bei dieser Art «Studienauftrag» oftmals Pauschalentschädigungen entrichtet, weshalb der Teilnehmerkreis eingeschränkt wird. Je nach Aufgabenstellung sind auch Kombinationen der nachstehen den Verfahren denkbar bzw. zweckmässig. Die Resultate solcher Varianzverfahren sind in hohem Masse von der Aufgabenstellung, also des «Wett bewerbs programms» abhängig. Neben den entsprechenden Rahmenbedingungen ist dabei den Problemstellungen, den Zielsetzungen sowie der Zusammenstellung des Beurteilungsgremiums grosse Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken."

In der Erstausgabe unseres Newsletters «step by step» von vergangenem September haben wir berichtet, dass die SRG Region Basel als Grundstückeigentümerin für das Areal des heutigen SRF-Studios auf dem Bruderholz einen Architekturwettbewerb (sogenanntes Varianzverfahren) lanciert. Ziel war es auszuloten, welche Bebauungsstruktur und Nutzungsdichte sich unter qualitativen Aspekten für die örtlichen Gegebenheiten am besten eignen.

Normally, I don't like translations to sound like explanations. Too often we feel compelled to translate what we know rather than what we see. But I'll make an exception here. With 'variance', you just don't have the same connotations available as in German.

neutral  Björn Vrooman: There is no split approach, Michael. It's Varianzverfahren because those requesting proposals want to have several options to look at. It's "Amtsschimmeldeutsch," if you will; you need more than one to call it a competition./I'll post a def. in the d-box.
