German term or phrase: Erkenntnisgrösse
This is included in an introduction to a contemporary art exhibition where philosophical trends are described. I'm just having trouble getting the translation right for Erkenntnisgrösse in this context and would be happy for some suggestions. Thanks!

Here is the sentnce for context:

Die sogenannte Wende zum Bild (Pictorial Turn), machte in der Nachfolge dieses Sprachpessimismus den visuellen Ausdruck zur primären Erkenntnisgrösse der Philosophie.

English translation:dimension of inquiry
Explanation:
That's different from order of inquiry. See example below:

"Hartmann also distinguishes between being and “that which is,” and thus between the ontological and ontic dimensions of philosophical inquiry."

Explanation:
or possibly 'hallmark'/'identifying factor', but 'characteristic' conveys best what is meant without any artificial Wortklauberei

order of knowledge/enquiry

Explanation:
It means that since the pictorial turn, visual expression has become, or shifted into, the first order of knowledge or enquiry, has been given primacy as a field of academic investigation. Grösse here in the sense of 'order'. That bit at least should be in any good dictionary.

Here it is used in the same sense again: http://www.museenbasel.ch/de/institution/austellungdetails.p...

This might give you a sense of what philosophers and critical theorists mean when they talk about the 'pictorial turn' and what it means for critical enquiry: http://newlearningonline.com/literacies/chapter-11/mitchell-...

@APaisley, this really isn't about the dimension of the enquiry. It is about its ranking, its order. Now the visual has been moved up the ranking, if you like, to take primary position.

  -> Thank you, Petrus

agree  Horst Huber (X): We might be cautious about words for seemingly new ideas coined by artists or art critics. They have a way of emoting in words. Whoever thought up "Erkenntnisgrösse" would have to explain how "Erkenntnis" is at all quantifiable. I'd be unsure.
