, namely from among the members.
Explanation:
Alternative 1 (entire phrase): Der Präsident wird von der Mitgliederversammlung gewählt und aus der Gesamtheit der Mitglieder bestimmt = The President ((or etc.)) is elected at the General Meeting of the Members, with any Member being eligible for the office.
((Remark 1: With credit given to Phil Goddard.))
((Remark 2: "Majority" would be Mehrheit, not Gesamtheit.))

"bestimmt" here means the same as "gewählt", viz. elected (or appointed, or selected).

Thank you this makes sense that all members are eligible and one is elected.

ignore it...

Explanation:
The second verb seems a little superfluous. I would probably say:
"The president is selected from the membership at the general meeting"
...or something like that.

neutral  philgoddard: No, you've misunderstood this - "aus der Gesamtheit der Mitglieder" means that any member can be elected. It doesn't say anything about majorities.

-> You're right - I too hastily read my assumption into it...

disagree  Eric Zink: A majority doesn't appoint. It generally elects (as it does here).

-> I've already agreed with this disagreement, as can be seen from the previous comment. : )

agree  Lancashireman: appointed by and on behalf of the entire membership (see addendum below)

-> The key to the question is how the entire phrase is to be translated, not just the word "bestimmt". This is somewhat clear from the context of the question.

agree  Haigo Salow: I would add "all" for Gesamtheit, namely from among all members.

Explanation:
I think the key thing here is to specify that the person who is elected will actually be one of the members. Maybe you can say "and will be one of the members" or "and will come from the membership". Maybe start a new sentence and say "Only members are eligible to become president." or "Only members are eligible to be candidates." Or "Candidates must be members."
