Thanks for the laugh, guys and gals. I thought of many things a Schutzautomat might be or do, but dispensing condoms was not one of them! I don't know where you get your expertise (and quite frankly I am kind of scared to ask), but I do appreciate the help. ;-)

As for Schutzmittelautomaten, I think this is bureaucratese. E.g., you can also find it in an article about the 1950s and it looks as if the German Bundesbahn is the culprit in this case: https://www.donaukurier.de/lokales/eichstaett/Eichstaett-KU-...

After all, in the eyes of a German bureaucrat, a tree is not a Baum. It's what you call "raumübergreifendes Großgrün." And a traffic light is not an Ampel; that so unsophisticated. It is, of course, a "bedarfsgesteuerte Fußgängerfurt"!

Just want to see how vigilant you are. As to slot machine, the context is understood. You put your money in the slot. Vending machine is also an option. Let a girl have her foibles.
By the way, I would think the 'sogenannten' refers to how the protesters referred to them and not the item itself.

And a dispenser doesn't necessarily mean you have to pay for the product.

Also, a Spielautomat is a slot machine, not a vending machine or a dispenser. It doesn't really make something either :P

And, yes, I do aim for precision, but in this context, I think both are fine. The links I posted lead to news articles and Rebecca's is a biography, not a technical document.

I'd rather like to know what people called them in the 1930s; else, you will have to remove "sogenannten" from the sentence in question.

In English, a machine makes something whereas a vending machine or dispenser is an Automat. Your Wiki link also says vending machine.

There is more than one (female) doctor who signed that letter. Even though you are probably right about the name, you can find at least two of the women who signed it at geschichte.charite.de. Just add the middle part to the compound noun =)

I looked up your text online to see if the sentences before and after this offered any clues, but they're unrelated.
The woman's name is Rahel Liebeschütz-Plaut. I've researched her a bit, but can't find any references to this episode.
