Tech/Engineering - Energy / Power Generation
German term or phrase: Speicher
In a business plan for a "Batteriespeicherkraftwerk," following the signing of the tenancy agreement the next phases are:

- Für die 1. Phase - Kauf des Speichers Juli 2018.
- Phase 2.+ 3. – Kauf der Speicher April 2019.
- Phase 4. – Kauf der Speicher August 2019.
- Phase 5. – Kauf der Speicher Januar 2020.

I understand that a "Batteriespeicherkraftwerk" is a battery storage power plant, but I'm not sure what is actually being purchased in these phases. What is the meaning (UK English) of the work "Speicher" in the context of this schedule?

battery storage module
Explanation:
Just a guess - I imagine that the batteries are stored in packs, as units / systems of batteries, and that these packs of batteries are to be bought successively, and that is what's listed in the business plan as "Speicher" (i.e. Batteriespeicher).

However, "Speicher" can also refer to "warehouse". So it depends on what the writer of the business plan actually wants to buy – the module itself or the building where the batteries are being stored.

agree  philgoddard: Or just "storage". I don't think it's a building.

agree  Ramey Rieger (X): storage module purchase - I think you need the 'module' bit for the phrase in the ST.
4 hrs

disagree  Johannes Gleim: 1. "battery" does not specify the main feature - being rechargeable - like accuculators. 2. "storage module" is redundant, no "Modul" mentioned in the context, i.e. overtranslation.

Grid battery systems are very modular(7). Cells are assembled into modules, modules are mounted into cabinet racks (mostly 19-inch), and racks are installed into a standard-sized container (mostly 40 feet long). Containers typically store 1-5 MWh of energy. A large battery ‘plant’ is essentially a bunch of containers. This modularity is not only good for BESS customization, but also for the control and maintenance down to the single cell level.

Sellers of Batteriespeicher seem to often mean racks.

However, containers are also feasible, since single Speicher are purchased in the 4th & 5th year.

agree  Lancashireman: Agree also with your point about battery storage meaning storage of batteries. Device preferable to module, IMO.

-> I'm sure there are better ways of describing this innovation. Not sure how Denglish diction or grammar would help the reader. /Phases 2 & 3: Buy a battery storage. Good plan.

agree  Björn Vrooman: Not particularly fond of device, but you could well be right about container, rack, etc. I'd suggest "battery XYZ" in 1st line and unit, rack, container or assembly below 1st [less repetitive].//At the very least, you need to know the capacity added!

-> Agree, could be a Tesla Powerwall, Powerpack or even an array of Powerpack units. All we know is it's a medium. Similar problem if it referred to Halbleiterspeicher without enough context. //At least it's on record - we tried!

neutral  Johannes Gleim: Long-winded cumbersome circumscription acc. MHO. BTW, an accumulator is no device and no store/stock/warehouse for batteries. Energy cannot be bought from the shelf like a device. Sorry!

-> "Energy cannot be bought from the shelf like a device." < That's why you store the potential in a device.

accumulator

Explanation:
Akkumulator m accumulator
Akkumulatorzelle f accumulator cell, storage (battery) cell
Speicher m 1. (computer) memory, store, storage (device); 2 (Nrt) director; 3. accumulator; 4. s. Speicherbecken
Speicherkraftwerk n storage power station
(Budig, Fachwörterbuch Elektrotechnik und Elektronik)

As electrical engineer I learned to distinguish between "battery" and "accumulator" since apprenticeship as electrician from the very beginning. A "battery" is a pile or stack of non-rechargeable cells like a AA pile. A accumulator is an rechargeable storage device like a car accumulator.

A rechargeable battery, storage battery, secondary cell, or accumulator is a type of electrical battery which can be charged, discharged into a load, and recharged many times, as opposed to a disposable or primary battery, which is supplied fully charged and discarded after use. It is composed of one or more electrochemical cells. The term "accumulator" is used as it accumulates and stores energy through a reversible electrochemical reaction.

Ein Batterie-Speicherkraftwerk ist eine Form des Speicherkraftwerks, welches zur Energiespeicherung Akkumulatoren verwendet, d. h. wiederaufladbare elektrochemische Zellen.
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batterie-Speicherkraftwerk

A battery storage power plant is a form of storage power plant, which uses batteries on an electrochemical basis for energy storage. Structurally battery storage power plants and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are comparable, although the former are larger. The batteries are housed for security in their own warehouses or in containers. … Various accumulator systems may be used depending on the power-to-energy ratio, the expected life time and, of course, the costs.
:
Mitsubishi installed a storage facility in Buzen, Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan with 300 MWh capacity and 50 MW power. The storage is used to stabilize the network to compensate for fluctuations caused by renewable energies. The accumulator is in the power range of pumped storage power plants. The batteries are installed in 252 containers.

Energy storage is the capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time. A device that stores energy is sometimes called an accumulator or battery
:
A rechargeable battery, comprises one or more electrochemical cells. It is known as a 'secondary cell' because its electrochemical reactions are electrically reversible. Rechargeable batteries come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging from button cells to megawatt grid systems.

Accumulation of electricity
Master Thesis
:
Abstract
This master thesis deals with issue of electricity accumulation. The aim of this thesis is technically and economically evaluate options of electricity accumulation and optimization of a power system with accumulation. In the first part of the thesis the most common accumulator types with their storage principle, construction, technical parameters, advantages and disadvantages were described.
:
Using accumulators in a large scale can increase the efficiency of electricity production in power plants. Power plants will be able to work in their economic points and surpluses will be stored in accumulators. Energy from these accumulators can balance energy in the grid or compensate frequency. Accumulators have fast response and they are the best elements for this purpose.

When batteries are mentioned, we tend to first think of coin cells and smartphone batteries. In fact, the need for increasingly powerful electricity accumulators for portable entertainment has decisively been driving the development of efficient rechargeable batteries.
:
Being tested as well are lithium-ion based large-scale accumulators, … where a modular system capable of storing five Megawatt hours of electricity is running.
