In Ganztagsschulen werden Kinder am Vormittag und am Nachmittag von Pädagoginnen und Pädagogen betreut.
Dabei gibt es zwei Typen der Ganztagsschule:
Verschränkte Abfolge
Getrennte Abfolge

Ganztagsschule in verschränkter Form von 08:00 – 16:00 Uhr, ganztägige Anwesenheitspflicht
Ganztagsschule in getrennter Abfolge von 08:00 – 17:00 Uhr, vormittags Unterricht, danach Nachmittagsbetreuung


Bei der verschränkten Form sind Unterrichtsstunden, Freizeit, Pausen, Sport usw. also über den ganzen Tag verteilt mit ganztägiger Anwesenheitspflicht.

@ Lancashireman Good point, Andrew. The timetabling, though, as in the case of my Vienna-schooled grandchildren streamed into a separate or combined cohort, is IMO a product of the 'Verschränkung' - the cross-over ('folding of arms').

What's that got to do with streaming?

staggered @ Lancashireman I find your timetabling point 'staggering', Andrew, and nowt to do with the 'streaming' or class-number splits. An Austrian schoolday, in Viennese private, semi-private, 'direct-grant' and public schools at least, have periods of 50 mins. each, starting at 8.00 a.m. - each with just 5-min. breaks, including over lunchtime -except for the last lesson. that may run 06.45 p.m- to 7.00 p.m. There are no 'staggered' periods, only ones postponed for class outings - quite common for skiving teachers who, laughably, complain to the media about overwork and lazily force their students to give presentations - Referate - to fill out the period.

I believe it is simply to do with the Austrian schooling system, nothing to do with bi-lingual schools. All the links I have found mention both terms but only refer to the Austrian education system. Would need further context in order to confirm this.

I have looked at several Austrian websites and this seems to be a very common educational term. Then I saw that actually the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and research use "Form", rather than "Abfolge.
Example sentence:

"Form" would make sense in British English: A form is an educational stage, class, or grouping of pupils in a school. The term is used predominantly in the United Kingdom.

I assume a mixed cohort. At a bilingual school in Vienna with a class or 'form' size of 25, there may for instance be 12 pupils in the 'dominant' ENG-language and 12 in the 'dominant' German-language group, with one 'floater' whose dominant - mother or father - tongue may change from English to German or vice versa at Vienna Volksschule (DEU > Grundschule) level.

PS perhaps also: 'sending into a combined group' for the first part. The 'Nachmittags-betreuungs-gruppe' - with pupils joined from various forms - is not strictly a class or a form but routinely an afternoon homework-supervision etc. cohort mentored by a Nachmittagsbetreuer/-in/-innen > may be two, one in German + the other in a non-German language > who may be teacher-trained but would not normally teach any 'formal' classes in the morning. At the start or end of term or during teacher-strike spells, this Group might be run in the morning.
