German term or phrase: Fort- und Weiterbildungsmarkt
Hello again,

DE:

I understand that Fortbildung is just any type of life-long learning and is often referred to as CPD in British English.

Then there is Weiterbildung, which at least as far as I know is, again, CPD in UK English, and means slightly more structured training within the context of an acquired professional qualification. A nurse for the elderly would attend a Weiterbildungskurs in order to obtain a nursing care-related certificate that nicely supplements her nursing-care qualification. Well, that sort of thing ...

This might be more than just a nuance and as such might be worth preserving?

Cheers,
Sebastian Witte

agree  philgoddard: Fortbildung and Weiterbildung can be translated as a single concept.

  -> Of course, there's a distinction. But its usefulness would be outweighed by the resulting clutter in the sentence

disagree  Johannes Gleim: Sorry, it can't. 'Weiterbildung' refers to the education level, 'Fortbildung' to the profession.

  -> I don't disagree. But it looks awkward if we highlight those differences in English.

agree  Gordon Matthews: I think this embraces both advanced training and more general continuing education or adult education. Anything else seems stilted and/or long-winded.

  -> My thinking entirely

agree  Kevin Fulton: Anything else would sound like a translation

agree  Ramey Rieger (X): Live & learn

agree  Jennifer Caisley: Agree completely - I just don't think we draw the distinction between the two as keenly (at least, in practice!) in English!
14 hrs

agree  0412 (X): Agree. In the UK we use CPD for Fortbildung but continued education is a good compromise. Trying to explain Weiterbildung would be messy.

Explanation:

Regelungen in Deutschland

• Weiterbildung die Bildung über die bisherige fachliche Ausrichtung hinaus weiter;

The primary purpose of adult education is to provide a second chance for those who are poor in society or who have lost access to education for other reasons in order to achieve social justice and equal access to education.[14] Therefore, adult education is often a social policy of the government. Continuing education can help adults maintain certifications, fulfill job requirements and stay up to date on new developments in their field.
