I also checked Wittur. They state only "overspeed governor", but not "overspeed governor rope". You will find that Wittur also says "rope" without any determiner:

A governor is part of elevator safety that you will find in the hoistway or overhead space. The second that an elevator car starts falling or even rising too fast, the governor triggers the safety mounted on the car frame and brings the car to a halt. The governor rope runs over the governor sheave and down to the elevator car and is attached to the safety trip mechanism. The governor rope continues all the way down to the pit and runs under a sheave down there and then makes the journey back to the governor. This governor rope arrangement forms a continuous loop while the elevator moves up and down the hoistway. If the car starts going too fast, centrifugal force pushes flyweights outward in the governor against the spring. In simplistic terms it tells the brakes to kick in and stops the car from falling or rising too quickly. As this entire safety system relies on the governor rope, it is very important that it is reliable and in great working condition.

But is the term actually archaic? What I am saying is that, contrary to my previous belief, the term still seems to be in actual use among those professionally involved with such things (the man I was talking to was an engineer and was explaining to me exactly how the cables (or wire ropes) were spliced together, etc.)

I have always had trouble with the term "wire rope" because during my first 25 years growing up in the US all I had ever heard was "steel cable". When I first heard "wire rope" after moving to Germany and working as a translator, I told everyone it was incorrect.
Now, 40 years later, after moving back to the US, I was sitting in a ski lift talking to another native American, and he started talking about the wire rope suspending the lift. I guess you just never quit learning!
