German term or phrase: Unterschwallung
Die Verwendung von synthetischen Leimen
und Etiketten mit geringerem Papiergewicht
führt zu einem früheren Ablösen
der Etiketten von den Flaschen, teilweise
weit vor der Unterschwallung (erste Möglichkeit
der Etikettenaustragung). Diese Etiketten
werden dadurch größtenteils nicht
ausgetragen, verbleiben in der Weichlauge
und zersetzen sich u. a. in Fasern und Farbpigmente.

I came up with "undulation" but cannot find references to support my assumption in the context given.

caustic subsurge
Explanation:
I was able to dig up two references to Unterschwallung. The link in the Web reference area below only provides an (Austrian) German reference and I have translated the relevant sentence as the example sentence. The fact that the article refers to this piece of equipment as “sogenannten Unterschwallung” leads me to believe that it might be a bit of industry jargon, which could explain why it´s nearly impossible to reference.

I´ve also found 2 PDFs for the same product that provide a bilingual reference. They are dated 2013. See Page 4 on both PDFs.

German version: https://docplayer.org/36405236-Krones-lavaclassic-zuverlaess...

English version: http://m.sanitaryindustry.com/upload/201607/15/2016071509511...

The English version link took a while to load and would time-out, but hitting “retry” a time or two should do the trick.

You´re most welcome Edith!

Well, in this case, a native English translator may have used a more literal term while a non-native English translator would have had to “work harder” for it. Caustic subsurge is a huge departure from literally translating Unterschwallung. There´s gotta be a reason for that.

Undulation on its own isn´t particularly grabbing me since it seems odd to use it as a noun & a component of the delabeling process and also does not address the “Unter” in the source word. If your client is fine with a bit of editorial liberty for the sake of clarity, adding in “so-called” would do the trick.

Since °caustic subsurge° appears to almost never be used and could be regional-industry jargon and/or an outdated process, maybe phrasing it as °caustic "subsurge" bath° would be more readily recognized since °caustic bath° is quite commonly used. Putting quotes around "subsurge" would eliminate the need for using °so-called°.

Schwallvorrichtung

The object of this invention is to provide a label remover which can operate in conjunction with high conveyor speeds and provides adequate time in the flushing station to remove the labels. This present arrangement does not involve any moving parts other than the conveyor transporting the bottles through the bottle washing machine. All the flushing nozzles are fixed. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3946750.html

The labels are flushed from the carriers 17 by a flushing nozzle device 33 supplied from a conduit 34 (FIG. 7). However, labels are not permitted to escape from the container carrier pockets until the containers have reached a prepared zone where fluid jets flush the labels out of the pockets and off the containers. https://patents.google.com/patent/US4044783A/en

Example sentence(s):
  • With a so-called caustic subsurge with a massive pump, the labels are swashed off the bottle.

Thanks Mary and Kim
Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you so much, Mary. My only problem: Krones often use non-English native translators. But I suppose if I write "so-called", it is fine. What do you think of my own idea "undulation"?

agree  Kim Metzger: I like your solution better. Couldn't figure out how to deal with the "unter" prefix.
