German to English translations [PRO] Law/Patents - Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs / Zeugnis Jahrgangsstufe 2
We do have Kursstufe/Jahrgangsstufe 1 and 2 (formerly grade 12) and Kursstufe/Jahrgangsstufe 3 and 4 (formerly grade 13), but actually it starts as early as grade 11 (formerly) due to the G8 (8 years of secondary education) instead of 9).
And we always had 4. Formerly, it was 12/1, 12/2, 13/1 and 13/2 (Kursstufe/Oberstufe)
The U.S. has it all: quarters, trimesters and semesters.
@Lancashireman I wasn't advocating for American usage; in fact, I'd prefer BrE, considering that part of Tanzania used to be a British colony (and EN is the main language for teaching in secondary schools, I think).
However, I thought the 3rd semester of secondary school could also be "6. Klasse"?
I don't think that grammar, specialized (sic) or specialist needs to be included here, unless the context is less about age range and more about academic level.
FYI, Tanzania: "Secondary education has two levels. Ordinary Level (O' Level) is Form 1 through Form 4. After Form 4, a certificate is issued to all passing the Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations. Selected students may progress to Advanced Level (A' Level) education - Forms 5 and 6 - or study for an ordinary diploma in a technical college. Not all schools offer A' Level classes. All students at this level are boarding students. Because of the potential problems associated with boarding both male and female students, A' Level schools restrict enrollment to one sex." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Tanzania#Levels
Further above: "4 years of secondary ordinary level education for ages 14–17 (Form 1-4) 2 years of secondary advanced level education for ages 18–19 (Form 5 and 6)"
Maybe that helps some?
RE: Heligoland. Was there once. A lot of water. Very windy. That's when my memory fails me.
yes, right. No it is not a school leaving certificate (that's my problem ;-)) we have 4 terms. That's what I have called it for the time being ("term" instead of semester").
The UK has a three-term year, so you probably need to retain the less well-known 'semester' (EN). Makes it sound more like a university, though. How many terms per year in an American school?
You will never get a panel of Kudokis from both sides of the Atlantic to agree on any term relating to the education system.

secondary school report
Explanation: for first semester of second year for Semester 1 Year 2 for third semester at the XYZ school

That works. One other possibility: Semester 3/4 (showing that it's the thrird out of four)

Asker: I have another question regarding this semester/year-thing. In German in reads: Jahrgangstufe 2, Schuljahr 2017/18, 3. Kurshalbjahr. My translation: Course level 2, school year 2017/18, 3rd semester (it is the 3rd of 4 semesters in 2 school years (upper grades). Would that work? because it would look strange, if the I wrote: year 2, semester 1 and in German it is 3. Kurshalbjahr.
Asker: Thanks for your assistance. Final version: Course level 2, School year 2017/18, 3rd semester.
