neutral  Lara Barnett: This may be correct but I think more context is needed as it is a very specific term.
8 mins

neutral  writeaway: right idea but not the right terminology/register in this case afaik
13 mins

neutral  B D Finch: Wear and tear can happen to new equipment.

disagree  Tony M: I would go so far as to say this is not right at all; 'wear and tear' is usually 'usure' — and note that in this context, 'ageing' might just refer to the fact it is oboslete, can no longer support latest software versions etc. — not necessarily worn out.

disagree  Lara Barnett: I wouldn't say this, and wouldn't spell it this way either

agree  writeaway: ageing equipment definitely works (ageing is the correct UK spelling)

neutral  B D Finch: The other way around: "aging equipment", to avoid it seeming like instructions on how to age your equipment.

neutral  Tony M: I agree with BDF's point: in a technical context, this word order is more open to ambiguity than the reverse.

neutral  writeaway: As Florence already posted and I backed with refs (and it's ageing en anglais UK)
6 mins

neutral  mchd: ageing + construction. Dans votre réf., c'est la bonne structure de phrase, mais pas pour le S/T ci-dessus.
1 hr

neutral  B D Finch: I think that's the right way around, but "ageing".
3 hrs

agree  Tony M: Yes, although i would use the GB spelling 'ageing'

vieillissement du matériel
ageing hardware

Explanation:
Given that we appear here to be in a hi-tech situation, I think the term 'hardware' is more likely to be appropriate — even if it isn't actually literally computer hardware...
And not surprisingly, I would favour the EN-GV spelling, unless we know for sure this is designed for a US readership?

Note that I strongly favour this word order, even though it could be argued to be likewise ambiguous; but in a heading like this, and with what follows immediately, and slight ambiguity would be immediately dispelled. Look at it this way: if the sentence were written out in full, it might be something like "The problem we are facing here is the continuing use of ageing equipment"..

material degradation

Explanation:
it is easy to do direct translation but it really means material degradation.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
disagree  Tony M: 'material' is a faux ami here: used like this, it would tend to be read as 'significant' or 'important'; and 'degradation' is not necessarily part of 'vieillissement' — it could simply be obsolescence, with the equipment in good working order.

The maintenance of ageing plant and equipment

October 30, 2014

All plant and equipment will be subject to ageing which, if not managed appropriately, can lead to equipment/plant failure which, in turn, can lead to future financial burdens and pose health and safety, legal and business continuity issues.

ageing of plant and equipmentAs part of their overall maintenance strategy, organisations should identify plant and equipment that represents a high risk in terms of loss and which can be subject to ageing. They should put in place, as part of their maintenance strategy, a regime to maintain such items in a state of good repair and efficient working order.
