Military / Defense / 2nd world war text
French term or phrase: niches à munitions
Hello all,
I'm translating a text on the redevelopment of a 2nd World War site in France. I have an idea what niches à munitions look like, I think they are a sort of alcove designed to house artillery, though I might be wrong, but haven't found the English translation yet. Grateful for any help!
Au cours de l’été 1942, six grands encuvements circulaires en béton avec niches à munitions attenantes sont construits pour recevoir les pièces de 155 mm modèle 1917 GPF (Grande Puissance Filloux)....

ammunition recess or cache
Explanation:
Iwas thinking of "cache", which is a hidden store of ammunition but found this (p 289) which seems to be authoritative

of course ammunition and armaments are also kept in a
"magazine"

which may be better here as it seems it may be a bigger chamber?

agree  philgoddard: I don't think it matters exactly what you call them.

disagree  Daryo: it does matter what you call them - an "ammunition store" would be far more than just "une niche attenante à l'encuvement"

Army bunker

Explanation:
Based on the images that appear when searching for niches a munitions. It would appear to be some sort of bunker

disagree  Daryo: you do get "ammunition bunkers" close to gun batteries, but an "army bunker" is another beast altogether.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree  Daryo: "ammunition recess" is the most likely - it's for the ammunition kept close the guns, as in "niches à munitions attenantes (aux encuvements)"

-> Thanks. Yes, it looks like recess here as magazine is larger and intended for longer-term storage of arms, ammunition, and provisions

These are of a similar site, perhaps even the same one. It refers to "niches à munitions" and to "magasins de combat", which appear to be the same thing.
