Note that this is the Service Régional, NOT Départmental and that the Region in question is Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Grenoble isn't the regional capital (that's Lyon), though it is the capital of the Department of Isère.

Note that the distinction in France between Police Judiciare and Police Administrative is far from straightforward and it is a functional distinction. The same officer can sometimes be acting in either capacity, depending on the circumstances.

disagree  Eliza Hall: I would say "judicial" (judiciary is usually a noun and relates specifically to judges, vs. judicial = the whole judicial system). Also would omit "service" (which sounds like you're talking about some ancillary division or vendor that serves the police).

  -> I suggest that you look up "judicial" and "judiciary" in a dictionary. I have used the correct term. This may sound odd to an American, but in Europe we still have the quaint idea that the police should serve the public, hence "service", not "department".

* Omit "service" because in the police context, "Service" is usually best rendered in English either by "Department" or just by leaving it out and using the word "Police" alone;

* Judicial rather than judiciary, because the "judiciary police" sounds like it might mean policing the judges, as opposed to acting as police for the judges. Judiciary = judges, and is usually a noun, or occasionally an adverb meaning "relating to judges." Judicial = the whole judicial branch of government, and is usually an adjective.

disagree  Daryo: you present it as if it is an institution of Grenoble, while in fact it's only "the branch in Grenoble / le service ... de Grenoble" of a national / whole France institution; riots and civil unrest may happen à propos this not so "little difference", BTW

There are two types of police in this general sense:

I think that the native French speakers were trying to be helpful...

Based on my own research, I think 'Grenoble area judicial police' or 'Grenoble area national police' would work, depending on context. If referring to the name of the office(s), it should probably be kept in French. 'Grenoble' refers to the *police jurisdiction*, not simply the city, which I was confused about. I still think it's a good idea to distinguish police judiciaire and police municipale, even if an officer can work for both bureaus at once.
