French term or phrase: batterie soit HS
Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of translations for the above. I know HS is out of order but it sounds strange to me to 'the car battery may be out of order'. I've written 'damaged'so far but the more I write it, the more I don't like it think it's inaccurate.

Ideas?

battery may be U/S

Explanation:
HS = Hors Services = not working
The exact equivalent in EN technical jargon is U/S = UnServiceable = cannot be used

In both cases, it does not specify the REASON, or whether or not it is a permanent or only temporary malfunction.

Note that the only doubt remaining in my mind is about the use of 'soit', which I asked about but received no response. Remember that 'soit' could be part of a pair 'soit... soit...' with the sense of 'either...or..'; or else it could be a true subjunctive in some construction that requires that mood — for example: « il se peut que la batterie soit HS »
