so the joins would not to spoil this unified appearance Explanation: I think because the other parts were plain, they kept the frieze plain too, so as not to draw undue attention to it. Do please note, too, that for wood, 'placage' is not 'plating' (that's for metal), but rather 'veneering' — as details are emerging, it would seem that the rounded form of this box has then been veneered with thin sheets of wood (or ivory) veneer, of course easier to bend. |
