oops DID (not difd) "vintage" can be seen as the amount of wine per year in other words, the harvest so can be a synonym of "year" or even of the place a wine is bottled but a vintage may also include a percentage of wine from another year https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vintage http://www.thefreedictionary.com/vintage

a vintage or yield is affected by weather of course and some years can be exceptionally good or particularly bad

http://vinous.com/articles/domaine-de-la-romanee-conti-an-es... "...Co-manager Aubert de Villaine describes 1979 as a very difficult vintage. Hail arrived on June 3rd, just before flowering. The vines recovered and produced a second crop that was brought in from October 11-20. Yields were a measly 6-7 hectoliters per hectare..." http://www.bipin.com/RomaneeNotes.htm 1979 vintage conditions The bud-break was abundant in 1979 but just before the flowering, Vosne-Romanée was hit by a severe hail storm that destroyed the vegetation and nearly 2/3 of the young gapes that were hardly born. The Romanée Conti and La Tâche area was most badly hit. Fortunately, thanks to the beautiful weather that followed, the vineyards recovered exceptionally fast and the very small crop that was left behind matured perfectly. The harvest took place from October 11 to 20. The "verjus" (grapes of second generation) that were picked in November made a wine that was not at the level of Grand Cru and was distilled and made into a Fine Bourgogne 1979 !

Well went digging a bit more and discovered that the 1979 red Burgundy doesn't make it into the top ranks anywhere that I can see. Yes, in some parts it was a "successful" harvest" (but not in several part of Burgundy because of hailstorms) but certainly not outstanding and the wine was average -good (whereas 1978 was "outstanding") Robert Parker, one of the most celebrated wine critics rates red Burgundy 1979 as "average" http://www.erobertparker.com/newsearch/vintagechart1.aspx and other charts put it in the average-good category but none have it as "generous" (which doesn't just mean quantity of wine but quality as well as the fruitiness/ripeness/high alcohol level of the grape which helps the durability of the wine) 1979 not mentioned at all here http://www.jancisrobinson.com/learn/vintages/burgundy-red and here it is only "good" http://www.vintagewinegifts.co.uk/acatalog/vintage_wine_char... Reference information: ++ROMANÉE-CONTI 1979 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Côte de Nuits. Grand Cruu. (from yields of only 14 hl/ha, which is incredibly low for this generous vintage).++ According to the Wikipedia article, and specifically, "Grand Cru" the yield is usually 35 hl/ha. The wines are incredibly expensive, and the 2nd most expensive in the world. I would, therefore, hazard a guess and say that for the year 1979, the yield was smaller than in previous years for "this vintage", but I would not say that it is comparing the yield to yields elsewhere.
