English term or phrase: running 40 gear
I am translating a book and the hero says:

'I went home and changed again into my running 40 gear'.

I do not know if I have understood this sentence properly. Does 40 refers to degrees? I know that runners performance has much to do with the temperature outside. Or is it something totally different?

Thanks in advance,

I think Alison is right. Just remove the 40 that got in there somehow and we have a normal sentence in a story simply meaning

"change into my gear/clothes for running".

Just Googling

"I went home and changed again into my running gear"

brings up the story

I think so, too, but I was not sure. I amb sorry because I did not provide any context. It was a boy that used to run every day before going to work. I could not imagine him running 40 miles every day, even though he is supposed to be very strong. Thank you!

gear for running 40 km/miles

Explanation:
You really need to look at the context you have, but I think it's more likely to be about the goal of running 40 miles or km, rather than temperature. It's just the phrasing "running 40" isn't a natural English way of expressing running when it's 40°F outside. It's even less natural to express the idea of running when 40 years old.
