English term or phrase: Grid
Measurements were made from video images. To facilitate these measurements, a grid of 20 mm squares was attached to the back wall of the tank and a 100 mm reference scale was attached to the front of the tank.

Explanation:
It might be either (say) a white sheet with a criss-cross pattern of black lines on it (or vice-versa!) — or the use of 'grid' might imply something transparent, as would presumably be needed for the front one!

Asker, I don't think it would be anything like your link, since that is a metal grid or mesh that has a structured, 3-dimensional aspect to it that is unnecessary, indeed arguably undesirable.

Here, it seems to be being used simply as a visual reference; there is nothing in your context nor inherently in the word 'grid' to dictate what actual form it may take — we can infer that the rear one COULD be opaque, while the front one almost certainly needs to be transparent.
The only thing we can say about the word 'grid' is that it admits of the possibility of its being transparent or even open-mesh; perhaps other terms might have ruled out the possiiblity, or made it obvious.

Here is one kind of 'grid' being used simply as a background for photographing something (the object itself is irrelevant!)

I think you need to consider this more from the POV of a visual 'pattern of squares' than of a functional 'mesh'.

Notes to answerer
Asker: These two options that you stated were the main reason that I asked this question. I think it refers to something like this http://cut-weld.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/86.jpg rather than a sheet of paper.

agree  Jack Doughty: It could even be a metal grid.

-> Thanks, Jack! Yes, although in labs, for purely visual purposes, plastic is probably more usual these days.
