except then they say they just want to go "downtown" which is certainly not considered to be either travelling or "going places"

this is how the ticket seller understands it.

with Covid-19 lockdowns in place some people might say this meaning they want (to be able to have) the freedom to move around a bit more but that is not the usual meaning at all.

"go places" also has a meaning of succeed in the world (but that would be a different context) https://www.lexico.com/definition/go_places

to travel/be successful

Explanation:
'go places' also has a meaning of being successful

I think the literal meaning here is to travel but that this choice of words was deliberate and the meaning of this phrase as to be successful is significant - 'I want to go places' sounds like more than just to literally travel, he really wants to do something with his life and contrasts with the only wanting to go downtown

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: can't really see how the "successful" part fits here?//So why put it in heading if you "certainly wouldn't translate it like that"?// Sorry, but changing to disagree because "be successful" just isn't right HERE

-> I certainly wouldn't translate it as 'I want to be successful' but I thought this other meaning was worth bearing in mind as it sounds grander than 'I want to travel' in my opinion and I think this has been done deliberately
