How Much Value Does Each Micro Conversion Have?
Use a Proxy to Find Out

For example, you could send an email blast to every golfer who signed up with you via your Zero Monet of Truth (ZMOT) campaigns. Wait 30 days. Do a match-back analysis of how many of those email subscribers bought golf gear on the website and how much total revenue they delivered. Say 1000 emails sent, 200 orders received, for a total revenue of $10,000. The economic value of every email address delivered by the ZMOT campaign?

agree  Luis M. Sosa: Term is widely used in corporate finance (investor relations) and in econometrics. Have not come across with term in marketing contexts, but I strongly agree with your interpretation.

neutral  Daryo: wrong explanation - you are joyously ignoring such annoying fine distinctions as the one between what is begin measured and what is the value of the measurement.

a variable that can be used *instead of / to estimate* another variable

Explanation:
one variable can be used as "a proxy" for another variable if there is a strong enough correlation between them and the "proxy" is easier to mesure.

One example: measuring the speed of the river flow in the middle of the river (or the water level) can be used as a "proxy" for estimating the debit of the river (the volume of water moved in a unit of time) as they are strongly correlated.

Basically it's about taking indirect measurements of some variable of interest by using another variable as "proxy".

In this ST you can not directly establish the [monetary] value of each "micro Conversion", so you have to do it indirectly - using OTHER variables (that then act as "proxy").

At the risk of stating the obvious: that's how "proxy" is used in this text - nothing that could be directly inferred from what is a "proxy" in a legal context, or a "proxy [server]" in computing, nor from the general purpose definition of "proxy".
