Insults aside, the argument doesn't even make sense. If it did, APA wouldn't ask people to transliterate Chinese titles:

Still, there is one exception: In the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing, a distinction is made between papers written for a general and a specialist readership.

If you are writing for the latter, they recommend you keep all of it, just as Tony said.

However, if it were that simple, the question remains why most sources that I quoted below state that you shouldn't use them when writing in Latin (or Greek).

Also, to make that clear again: I'm not talking about the use of ligatures in BE; that wasn't the question.

I agree with your hesitation; in no way would it be appropriate to change the author's own spelling of the title of their book (which they presumably chose deliberately!) merely in order to fit with some style manual. Writers for various reasons down the centuries have sometimes used quirky spellings in their titles, just like Shakespear, for example, whose spellings were probably on those of his time (i.e. not necessarily actually quirky'!) — but I can see no justification for 'modernizing' them, which would appear as a particualrly presumptuous form of "dumbing down"!

The original is on GoogleBooks and the author does use the ligature--throughout the entire book, though.

What I'm trying to get at is that if you don't use it anywhere else, why do so in the title?

Thank you, Björn. Yes, on all counts - and I am using Chicago style. I have seen some of these guidelines, but the thing that made me hesitant is that the ligature appears in the actual title of a book - and this made me feel that it should remain unchanged. Now that I have seen your last link, however, I may change my mind, since this addresses my situation more closely. I will definitely try to perform more searches around this topic before making a final decision.

I quote: "Ligatures are not used in anglicized or Latin words; in other foreign words national practice is followed."

You may be interested to know that even in the "Style Guide for Publications of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," it says (on p. 31):
"In quotations, preserve the spelling of the quoted source. However, do not re-create the ligature in the spelling of the word; instead, use the letters ae."

Please note that I am only speaking about the title of the book. If writing about Aelius Gallus in general, I would not use the Æ.
