Bible-punching

English translation: pushing the Bible in an aggressive way

English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Social Sciences - History / Labour and socialistic parties try to take, beside working-classes, other social strata into the parties
English term or phrase: Bible-punching
And yet the appeal of such parties sometimes went far beyond the working classes; and even those mass parties most uncompromisingly identifying themselves with one class patently mobilized support from other social strata. There were, for instance, countries in which socialism, in spite of its ideological lack of rapport with the rural world, captured large areas of the countryside - and not only the support of those who might be classified as 'rural proletarians': as in parts of France, of central Italy and of the USA, where the most solid stronghold of the Socialist Party was, suprisingly, to be found among the Bible-punching poor white farmers of Oklahoma - with a vote of more than 25 per cent for its 1912 presidential candidate in the twenty-three most rural counties of that state. Equally remarkable, small artisans and shopkeepers were notably overrepresented in the membership of the Italian Socialist Party, compared to their numbers in the total population.

agree  Björn Vrooman: Yes, "bible thumper" was the first thing I thought of when reading your concise explanation (and before seeing your added notes or Tony's comment). Never know why this term's mostly used for the States; it's not like there aren't any in Europe.

-> Yes, thanks! I was actually thinking of US English. Not so sure the European variety is quite the same. I certainly associate the term with a particular American type.

agree  Robert Forstag: Here (given that the phrase is being applied to "poor white farmers" and not Christian preachers) the phrase seems to simply mean that the latter were devout Christians who vocally espoused a fundamentalist version of Christianity.

-> Thanks. Indeed, except most are very far from being at all Christian...

agree  Charles Davis: I've nearly always heard "bible-basher/ing", which is said to be mostly British, with bible thumping more common in US.
