English language (monolingual) [Non-PRO]
Bus/Financial - Economics
English term or phrase: sample
Context:

A strategy that buys, and then rolls, one-month, at-the-money S&P 500 put options performs well in each of the seven crises.
However, it is very costly during the ‘normal’ times, which constitute 86% of our sample, and as such seems too expensive to be a viable crisis hedge.

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: selection chosen, NOT collection selected

-> That depends on the method used - not all studies are rigorous - they maybe simply collected whatever data they could lay their hands on without worrying about the set of samples being "representative" or not ... Thanks!

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): Collection is not the right term but cases selected is fine.

-> That depends on the fine points of the methodology they used, which we don't know. Maybe they had some "selection criteria", maybe they just collected any data that happened to be available. Thanks!
