As I've said, "specific" means "the total surface area of a material per unit of mass", that's what BET isotherms are used to measure. In your case for the adsorption of contaminants, it's related to the porosity of the material doing the adsorbing and is measured per gram. If grams are mentioned, then you can be sure that it should be "specific surface area".
