Underweight

Underweight is defined as weight-for-age z-score below -2. Because weight is relatively easily measured, underweight is commonly used to assess malnutrition. But, unlike WASTING, which relies on weight and length/height, underweight relies only on body weight. As such, underweight does not indicate whether the child is underweight due to WASTING (reduced body weight relative to height), STUNTING (unattained height for age), or a combination of both. It is, therefore, recommended to additionally assess the child for stunting and wasting. Also, underweight cannot be relied upon in situations where the child’s age cannot be accurately determined.

emaciación y desmedro
Explanation:

Undernutrition manifests in four broad forms: wasting, stunting, underweight, and micronutrient deficiencies.

Wasting is defined as low weight-for-height. It often indicates recent and severe weight loss, although it can also persist for a long time. It usually occurs when a person has not had food of adequate quality and quantity and/or they have had frequent or prolonged illnesses

emaciación y raquitismo

Explanation:
The terms wasting and stunting were introduced in the early 1970s by John Waterlow to differentiate, among underweight children, those who had a low weight in relation to their height (wasted) from those who were small for their age (stunted) [1–3].
Wasting and stunting are often presented as two separate forms of malnutrition requiring different interventions for prevention and/or treatment. These two forms of malnutrition, however, are closely related and often occur together in the same populations and often in the same children.

Stunting is the impaired growth and development that children experience from poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation. Children are defined as stunted if their height-for-age is more than two standard deviations below the WHO Child Growth Standards median.
