English term or phrase: Tripping by overspeed governor
In the context of a "EU-TYPE EXAMINATION CERTIFICATE" for an Integrated Elevator Controller for traction lifts, one of the technical specifications is "Max tripping speed" of the lift and then when refering to security rules, it mentions the "Tripping by overspeed governor". Does anyone know what does "tripping" refer?

Other instances where I found this term in other documents:

"the tripping speed of the overspeed governor shall be checked in the direction corresponding to the
descent of the car (see 9.9.2.1), the counterweight or balancing weight (see 9.9.2.2);"
