"Ladle" inseamna "polonic" asa cum spunea si Meirs. In acest context o varianta ar putea fi si "lopatica", conform pasajului:

"Pentru detonarea tunului, dintr-un butoiaş se lua cu o lopată o măsură de praf de puşcă ce se vărsa la baza ţevii." (link 1)
