“Cash value” of an insurance contract means any amount (determined without reduction for any charge or policy loan) that is defined as payable under the contract to any person upon surrender, termination, cancelation, or withdrawal. This also includes any amount that is permissible to borrow or pledge as collateral against the value of the policy. This is often associated with whole life insurance policies, which act as an investment vehicle for the insured, but can include other arrangements that act as an investment or income source for the insured. Conventional return premiums would not have cash value as they constitute a return of money for services/coverage no longer required.
