"Wake", nesse contexto, me parece ser o "rastro" da tempestade. Pensei primeiro em "engolindo o próprio rastro", mas acho que "tomando maiores proporções" / "tomando tudo à sua volta" traduzem melhor a ideia inicial que tive, pois tomar proporções maiores significa tomar tudo à sua volta, ou seja, engolir o próprio rastro e/ou tornar-se maior do que seu surgimento inicial (que contém também a ideia de "wake").
