outsourcing, kontraktfestelse av underleveranser. Det kalles outsourcing når et foretak setter deler av sin produksjon ut til underleverandører. Ved hjelp av logistikkprogrammer som just-in-time (JIT) har for eksempel bilfabrikanter funnet det regningssvarende å kjøpe et flertall av komponenter til bilene fra underleverandører. Gjennom å outsource operasjoner som andre kan gjøre bedre og rimeligere, kan foretaket prioritere videreutvikling av sitt kjerneprodukt eller sin kjernekompetanse. Privatisering og annen form for outsourcing i offentlig sektor er også blitt en trend. Det vakte for eksempel oppsikt da det ble kjent at myndighetene i USA ville outsource havnevirksomheten i fem viktige havnebyer til et spesialforetak i Dubai.
