“The crack running behind this rock is likely a stress relief joint. When the gorge was carved thousands of years ago, natural pressure in the rock walls pushed outward towards the river. This expansion opened up joints or cracks deep in the rock that run parallel to the gorge walls. When erosion exposes these cracks, catastrophic rock falls can occur. The company has a plan to prevent this section of cliff from crashing down.”
