Ebben a mondatban nem tudom, hogy fordítsam a fenti két szót.: "Always, he had been a shambler or a tottler, a clumsy construct of knobby joints and crude bones, stilting along in a praying-mantis gait."

Egy krimiben egy magányos fiúról van szó, aki nem mer kimenni a külvilágba, és valószínűleg - bár ez egyelőre nem egyértelmű - nem is néz ki valami bizalomgerjesztően.

Szerintem sem kellemes küllemű a leírás alapján, hisz az a "clumsy construct of knobby joints and crude bones" nem igazán egy bájos kisfiú leírása, ezért én semmiképp nem használnék aranyos jelzőket, mint csiszegő-csoszogó, illegő-billegő, csetlő-botló... A Tottler még nem került be a szleng szótárba, de a Shambler már igen. Eredetileg egy szörnyűséges alak neve volt, mostanra már átalakult a jelentése, de még mindig az ormótlan alak lomha járására utal, minden bájat nélkülöz.

agree  Katalin Horváth McClure: A csetlő-botló jobb, igaz, hogy a shambler csoszog is, de mindkettőnek a bizonytalan, imbolygó, reszketeg járás a jelentése, szerintem itt erről van szó (később ott a clumsy is, ami ismét az ügyetlenséget hangsúlyozza).

Szerintem sem kellemes küllemű a leírás alapján, hisz az a "clumsy construct of knobby joints and crude bones" nem igazán egy bájos kisfiú leírása, ezért én semmiképp nem használnék aranyos jelzőket, mint csiszegő-csoszogó, illegő-billegő, csetlő-botló... A Tottler még nem került be a szleng szótárba, de a Shambler már igen. Eredetileg egy szörnyűséges alak neve volt, mostanra már átalakult a jelentése, de még mindig az ormótlan alak lomha járására utal, minden bájat nélkülöz.

  -> Javaslatom a szlenges jelentésre vonatkozott, mivel ez a kérdés. A "normál" szótári jelentések nem segítenek, ezért hivatkoztam szleng szótárakra. Igen, az első szó szlenges jelentése a szörnyalaktól indult ki, a tottle pedig nincs még a szleng szótárban.

Nem a kinézetével van baj, hanem azzal, hogy kamaszodik - a végtagjai megnyúltak, és nem tudja, hogy mit kezdjen velük. Ezért botladozik (suta), csoszog) Jó még a nyakigláb, vagy szinonimái (hórihorgas), ha a tágabb környezet megengedi.

"A hirtelen növés hatására nagyon esetlenné válnak. A kéz és a láb néhány héttel előtte még rövidebb volt, és az agynak még nem volt ideje megtanulni a megváltozott méreteket. Ezért nem szabad dühöngenünk, hogy gyermekünk mindennek nekimegy, s összetöri a nagymamától örökölt, féltve őrzött ünnepi porcelánunkat. Fiaink nem udvariatlanságból, vagy nyegleségből tarják kezüket folyton a nadrágzsebben, hanem így igyekeznek helyet keresni gorillakarjaiknak. Csoszognak rendes járás helyett, nehogy megbotoljanak. Minél többször hallják tőlünk: „ne csoszogj”, „hol a kezed”, annál inkább úgy érzik, hogy mindenki őket figyeli és kritizálja. Ettől még szerencsétlenebbnek érzik magukat, és még sutábbá válnak. A kritika csak erősíti bennük azt az érzést, hogy valami nincs rendben a testükkel, és megakadályozza, hogy felszabadultabban mozogjanak."
