Kiterjedése függ a klíma változásaitól. Napjainkban (a foltokban előforduló permafrosztot is beleszámítva) a Föld szárazföldjeinek kb. 20%-án van kisebb vagy nagyobb mélységig tartósan fagyott állapotban a talaj.
