English term

press the reset button on how

English to French Other Government / Politics
The EU needs to *press the reset button on how* it readies itself, adapts and meets the challenges of the early part of this century.

Discussion

Gladis Audi, DipTrans Jun 5, 2020:
Eric KUATE FOTSO (asker) Jun 4, 2020:
You are absolutely right Tony. The expression is simply "press the reset button".
Tony M Jun 4, 2020:
@ Asker Your parsing is not exactly helpful: the expression is simply "press the reset button", and then 'on how it readies itself' is a separate idea.

disagree Tony M : 'reset' means 'remise à zéro', which I think is almost the opposite of your suggestion. It's not 'restart', but rather 'rethink'

English term (edited): press the reset button

repenser / revoir

...sa façon de / son approche à

I think the image used in EN is not really helpful here: 'remettre (ses idéées) à zéro' and you'd do better to translate just the straight, literal meaning they are trying to convey with a clumsy metaphor.

I suspect they are really saying "go back to square one", "start again from the beginning" — like doing a factory reset on your smartphone! In other words, the existing ideas aren't working, so they need to start over.

The national chief also noted that the endorsement of the declaration "presents an opportunity to press the `reset' button on the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the rest of Canada."

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I don't think this gives enough prominence to the 'reset' idea in the S/T, which is really of paramount importance here. Yes, but here, the need is to emphasize 'tout recommencer à zéro'

I beg to disagree.
