English term

aluet

English to Finnish Marketing Marketing / Market Research
'Decor: aluet'
- Does anyone know what 'aluet' means in English? Or still better, knows the translation in Finnish :)
It obviously has something to do with colours or surface structure.

Discussion

prozetka (asker) Mar 8, 2017:
I think "aluet" is a made-up word for marketing (like some car models, "Octavia", "Venga"). They have also a colour "broncet" (but luckily not in this translation). "Alumiininharmaa" sounds quite good. Broncet seems to refer to bronze, so it might be a good starting point that aluet refers to aluminium.
Tarja Karjalainen Mar 8, 2017:
"Aluet" seems such a rare word even in English, so "aluet-harmaa" may not say anything to the reader (besides being confusing, as Merja pointed out). I would probably ask the client about the exact shade of gray they refer to, then you could make a more informed choice (e.g. alumiininharmaa comes to mind, but again may not be a suitable connotation in your context). I wonder if "aluet" comes from another language - or whether it is supposed to bring to mind the indigenous Aluet-people :)
Merja Jauhiainen Mar 8, 2017:
Hmm, I think that would be quite confusing, as exemplified by my first reading - it seems like a Finnish word with a typo ;) I'd go for something else.
prozetka (asker) Mar 8, 2017:
Yes, it's marketing-related so probably that is not a good idea... Maybe I'll just settle for "aluet-harmaa".
Tarja Karjalainen Mar 8, 2017:
"harmahtava" seems to be in use these days, but I suppose it depends on your context (not sure how well it would work in marketing).
prozetka (asker) Mar 8, 2017:
Thank you! Thank you Tarja, that was exactly what I was suspecting and searching for! Now I only need to figure out a working Finnish term...
Merja Jauhiainen Mar 8, 2017:
Oops, sorry, didn't read carefully enough to see it was an English word...
Tarja Karjalainen Mar 8, 2017:
This particular appliance manufacturer seems to describe it as a type of gray: http://www.schott.com/magazine/english/sol106/sol106_07_colo...
prozetka (asker) Mar 8, 2017:
It describes the colour or the surface of a decorative list in a kitchen appliance.
prozetka (asker) Mar 8, 2017:
'aluet' was English The term was in the English text, so it is English, not Finnish. But of course it may be a typo.
Merja Jauhiainen Mar 8, 2017:
Typo? My first impression was to say it's a typo and should be 'alueet', but that doesn't really relate to colours or surface structures... Without more context, I'm clueless ;)
