Danish to English translations [PRO]
Marketing - Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
Danish term or phrase: tøjmærke
"Dette understøttes af aftalerne indgået af XX vedrører 5 forskellige tøjmærker i samme territorier, Caribien, Puerto Rico, Israel og USA."

Ignoring the ungrammatical construction for a moment, would you use "clothing brands" or "clothing labels" here? This is in a SKAT discussion of transfer pricing, so the common use within the industry of "label" for "brand" is leading me in that direction. Does it even matter? If so, why?

clothing brand

Explanation:
I would use clothing brands. I believe labels refer to the actual label on the clothing i.e the little sticker or patch with the brand name on it rather than the brand itself.

Asker: There are actually two meanings to the noun "label" in English. In addition to your reference, "label" is also used by participants in the clothing industry in branding their products for marketing purposes. See Lene Johansen's entry in the Discussion for examples. It's this latter use that I was referring to when I posed my question.

label

Explanation:
Even though the reference was to a 'brand' the brand would still be on a clothing label

Asker: Please see my response to the proposed answer "clothing brand" and Lene Johansen's Discussion entry. You've chosen the right word but for the wrong reason.
