Tech/Engineering - Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Danish term or phrase: Dn
This abbreviation occurs in a specification of a ship's construction, in a section regarding supports for pipes, as follows:

Fladjernet skal have følgende dimensioner:

(Column 1)
Rør
nom.diam.
Dn
16-65 mm
80-150 mm

(Column 2)
Bøjle
fladjernsdim.
b x t
25 x 4 mm
50 x 4 mm

It occurs again later:
"Afstanden mellem bøjlerne på samme rør må ikke overstige 1,5 m for rør med Dn = 80 mm og derunder og 2 m for rør med Dn = 100 til 150 mm."

It looks at first sight like the writer's own abbreviation for "Dimension", but I'm unsure. Anyone come across it before? None of the Wikipedia suggestions seems to apply http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DN

DN

Explanation:
DN is a commonly used, international abbreviaton for nominal diameter. It is actually 'explained' in your column 1.

I don't understand why you say that none of the suggestions in Wikpedia seems to apply. When I look it upnow, after posting my answer, I see that this comes up as the first suggestion........

Asker: Bad day at the office. Thanks Leif. After receiving the reference from Salvador and Gry, I re-googled and re-read the wikipedia entry. I then realised I should not be working and went back to bed to sleep it off. :) I also closed the question under "Other" (i.e. embarrassment).

Asker: Many thanks - I should maybe have googled "DN pipes" in the first place instead of just Dn.
