Danish term or phrase: svangerskabstidspunkt

Here is the text:

Her har forfatteren opsamlet oplysninger omkring aktiviteter, reproduktive sundhedstilstand og kemiske eksponering. Mandlige medarbejdere på marken, der havde haft aktivitet i marken indenfor 3 måneder før konception var evalueret i relation til uønsket abort, for tidlig fødte og reduceret vægt ved ** svangerskabstidspunktet.**

For tidlig fødsel var ligeledes associeret med XXX (Brand name of chemical).

En association mellem XXX og for tidlig fødsel var påviselig, men det er meget svært at konkludere noget på grund af den begrænsede eksponeringsfastsættelse.

I am struggling with a proof in very shaky English, but a lot of the terminology is correct. Far from all of it, however, so I am checking as far as possible.

A lot of animal studies are referred to, but this one is a study of human agricultural workers.
The translator has written ´reduced weight at conception´, which is meaningless. (to me at least)

When, then is the ´svangerskabstidspunkt´? All through, at birth (which in this case may be early...)
Thanks for any suggestions!

Or does it mean
reduced weight in relation to the stage of pregnancy ?
i.e. lower than average weight all the way through?

In the end I had to make a decision and deliver the job. I went for the interpretation about low weight during the pregancy and added a note that the Danish was unclear.

The second time ´svangerskabstidspunktet´ is mentioned is what made me wonder whether it really meant ´tidspunkt i svangerskabet´. As I am sure you know, Danes are fond of forms like that, particularly when writing concisely and formally.

I am adding a note to the client, but this is, as I said, a small note in 100 pages of references to various studies, and the results of this particular study are too uncertain to be considered in the overall assessment (for approval of the chemical for sale in Denmark).
Makes you think seriously about buying anything not grown organically, but then things were not much better with the natural aflatoxins and ergot and whatever else used to pollute crops in the old days! There are reasons for using some ofthe chemicals!

Luckily there have been several different writers through the text, (nearly 100 pages altogether) and most of the Danish is reasonable, if formal and complicated or compressed. And there are a lot of tables (= pure terminology and figures).

As my deadline was yesterday (now just ASAP by agreement with the client...) I think I will go for that interpretation and add a note. It will not tip any results in the long run, or else the end client can get hold of the original study referred to, which was in English.

I think this is shaky Danish as well. First of all "svangerskab" is a period (=graviditet) and tidspunkt is a short moment, so this is itself a contradiction which does not make much sense. If it is meant to be the beginning of the "svangerskab", yes it would be the conception, but then it should be the reduced weight of the father! The reduced weight of the child at birth should have been "fødselstidspunktet", as you suggest yourself. If it is the weight of the child all the way through, the wording should have been "i forhold til svangerskabstidspunktet" - but this is actually the only way the term "svangerskabstidspunkt" make any sense = "et givent tidspunkt i svangerskabet". I think your last interpretation is the most likely one. But who knows?

The more I read through all of this, the more it seems that this is the best fit, and that the Danish "svangerskabstidspunktet" is just an unfortunate and ambiguous term. It doesn't make any sense, because, as stated earlier, pregnancy is not just one point in time. And the associated discussion about premature births, low birth weight, miscarriage, etc, seem to indicate that we are looking at the end of a pregnancy
