Dear translator community,

I need the English rendering of this Chinese name.

Thanks very much!

English translation:Huang Shengyang
Explanation:
Since it is written as 黄 声楊, then definitely the surname is 黄 as there is no practice in Chinese writing to put the surname at the end. And since the written Chinese character is simplified Chinese (声), I would presume this is a ZH-CN simplified name. Note: the other 2 Chinese characters are the same in both traditional and simplified Chinese.

Going by the present practice, I would simply write it as Huang Shengyang.

Shengyang Huang/ Huangsheng Yang (mainland China)

Explanation:
楊 is a long-form Chinese character. But 黄 and 声 are short-form.

If 黄 is the surname, then it is Shengyang Huang in mainland China. If 楊 is the surname, then it is Huangsheng Yang.

I also looked up some online materials. It seems that the name is Wong Sing-yeung according to the Wade-Giles system, if 黄 is the surname.

You may need to know who will be reading the translation or where this 黄 声楊 is from. People in mainland China use Pinyin and those in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan use other systems such as the Wade-Giles. I hope this can help you.

neutral  Oceanwide: 如果“黄 声楊”这种写法无误的话,显然姓黄名声楊,大概取名声远楊、楊名立万之意。所以应该是前者即Shengyang Huang,不过按现在习惯,大陆一般都直接写为Huang Shengyang。//不好意思,我把“楊”看成“揚”了。不过,即便如此,姓“黄”名“声楊”的可能性还是更大,且与“声揚”谐音。起码在北方,若名字叫“黄声”,在当代,看起来、听起来都有些怪。

-> Thanks for your comment! I have that suspicion because楊 is the only long-form Chinese character in this name. 纠正你一个错误。扬名,字典解释为传播名声,应是“扬”,而非彼“杨”。彼“杨”为落叶乔木。/按书写习惯来看的确是黄声杨可能性较大,我只是怀疑有没有出错的可能性。本着准确第一的原则,确认一下总是好的。共勉之。

neutral  Sharon Toh, MITI MCIL: FYI: Wong Sing-yeung is not Wade-Giles. That's simply Cantonese transliteration... Elsewhere (except TW- Wade Giles), many names are transliterated based on dialect pronunciations or whatever the registrar heard when you reported your name to him/her...
