This is from a novel that takes place in Shanghai in the 1920s. A futures trader has just taken a long position, and as bad luck would have it, the price of the securities he bought immediately plummets. Here's the passage in question:

[他] 做了多头，一共买进一千股，谁知晦气星是跟他跑的，待他买进了以后，逐日跌价，像潮退一般。三天一**追证**，五天一**增证**，弄得他盘疲力尽，前天在上下半日里，又跌了七元六角之多，距离交割日近，结掉罢又肉痛，不结罢怕他还要跌价。一方面经纪人又催他解追据金， 催得像欠了皇粮一般。

I'm thinking here 证 is short for 证据金, and I'm guessing 证据金 is "margin," so 追证 is "margin call." Your thoughts? And would 增证 be "additional margin"?

you don't have to translate 增证 into margin adding or margin supplementation, paraphrase is supposed to be adopted in this context.

as a matter of fact, here the best Chinese word for "追加"，"增加" is "补足"(make up), for instance, in case of 5x leverage, the principal will be zeroed if the volatility gets 20%. To avoid zeroing of the principal, you have to make up the margin.
